One of Europe’s largest developers and operators of purpose built urban living concepts for students and professionals in northern and central Europe – International Campus (IC) – announces it has acquired a new student residence in Leiden, the Netherlands – called THE FIZZ Leiden. The student accommodation was acquired from Niersman Project Development B.V.
THE FIZZ Leiden student accommodation consists of two buildings connected by a bridge – and include a total of 394 residential units, tailored community spaces and a community garden.
The project will incorporate the latest in sustainable design and green building technology. Kokon Architectuur & Stedenbouw B.V. has designed THE FIZZ buildings with solar panels, a rainwater collection system, heat pump and a roof planted with sedum. Construction is scheduled to start in early 2022, with completion expected by the end of 2023.
“THE FIZZ Leiden is well designed, has a great variety of rooms of different sizes, is highly sustainable, and has an abundance in amenities. The asset is well-connected to the city centre, Leiden Central Station, Leiden Bio Science Park and Leiden University. The Leiden student market is characterised by a huge shortfall in suitable student housing and the shortages are expected to increase further over the coming years. With this asset we can cater to the high demand for next generation student housing in the city.”Rogier Hetterschijt, Head of Acquisitions for the Netherlands, International Campus Group
Founded in 1575, the Universiteit Leiden is the oldest university in the Netherlands and one of the highest ranking universities in the country, particularly in the fields of humanity, political science and law. According to the university, over 32,000 students are enrolled as of 2020. Leiden is also home to the universities of applied sciences as well as several private institutions.
“Although Leiden is only our second student residence in the Netherlands, International Campus is making significant future investments in the Netherlands to address the significant under supply of residential offerings for both students and professionals. We are also looking at at least two other new opportunities in the market, which we hope to announce in the coming months.”Michael Stapf, Chief Investment Officer, International Campus Group
As of 2020, the greater Leiden area has around 430,300 inhabitants. Rotterdam, Amsterdam and Den Haag can be accessed quickly via rail in under 30 minutes. For the daring, the beach is twenty minutes away by car and Schiphol Airport is just over 30 minutes away.
