Watkin Jones’ Ty Nant purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) scheme in Swansea tops out. To mark the completion of the building’s structure, a topping out ceremony was held earlier this week.
To celebrate the milestone, the layering of the last remaining cement took place at the top of the building. Colleagues at Watkin Jones were joined by subcontractors, representatives from Swansea University and Fresh.
“We are extremely pleased to hit this key construction milestone ahead of opening to students in September 2023 and commend Watkin Jones on the progress and build-quality achieved to date. Ty Nant sets a new standard for student accommodation in Swansea, and we look forward to continuing our relationship with Watkin Jones on future projects.”
Russell Petrie, Head of Student Housing, EQT Exeter

The Ty Nant scheme is being forward funded by EQT Exeter and will be managed by Fresh. The scheme will deliver 370 beds – a mix of cluster flats and studios. Sustainably designed with air source heat pumps to support renewable energy efforts incorporated into the construction, the development will achieve a BREEAM ‘excellent’ rating.
The development will include outdoor communal amenity space – including a courtyard and roof terrace, with attractive landscaping that will support and encourage local biodiversity
Residents living at Ty Nant will benefit from good transport links to university campuses – and are close to Swansea train station and within walking distance of the city.
As the second largest city in Wales, Swansea is a growing destination of choice for students. With a growing demand for student accommodation, Ty Nant will provide additional high-quality homes to satisfy this need.
“As rising demand for PBSA accommodation across Swansea continues, this is a great example of Watkin Jones creating the future of living, with sustainable and high-quality student homes.
“This scheme will offer students a great living experience in the city and will help to free-up much needed family homes, as student numbers in Swansea continue to grow. We are pleased to be continuing our partnership with EQT Exeter to develop high quality accommodation for future generations of students in the city, and this is a welcome addition to Fresh’s operational portfolio who will be managing this scheme.”
Alex Pease, Chief Investment Officer, Watkin Jones
Watkin Jones received planning permission for the Ty Nant development in 2021. The scheme isis Group’s second PBSA in the city, following the successful delivery of the nearby 967-bed St David’s scheme.
