Watkin Jones has recently practically completed on a new purpose-built student accommodation scheme in Hawkins Road – in the historic market town of Colchester, Essex. Watkin Jones has delivered the scheme on behalf of its clients Moorfield Group and Melberry Developments.

The Hawkins Road PBSA scheme spans over 92,000 sq ft. The development includes 286 student beds – a mix of cluster and studio rooms across nine floors. Amenities include social, study and gaming spaces, indoor and outdoor fitness spaces and a management suite.

“We are delighted to practically complete and hand the Hawkins Road development over to our clients, Moorfield Group and Melberry Developments. This project reflects our continued commitment to provide the highest quality PBSA accommodation, in great locations across the UK, that students can call home.”

The state-of-the-art development incorporates cutting edge technology and engineering to target reduced emissions and hit the Group’s sustainability objectives. Watkin Jones has achieved this by using recycled materials and innovative solutions.

One of the key features is the implementation of Air Source Heat Pump heating for the hot water system, which eliminates the need for gas usage. A grey-water irrigation system has also been integrated to efficiently utilise water resources.

Supporting sustainable transport, the Hawkins Road development includes charging points for electric cars, and has achieved a BREEAM “Excellent” rating.

“With sustainability at the forefront and state-of-the-art facilities, this development represents our commitment to elevating standards of student living and creating a homely and positive experience for residents.”
