Better Green Living has successfully retrofitted King’s College London’s Stamford Street Apartments. The refurbishment specialist transformed 557 bedrooms and bathrooms, 90 kitchens and communal spaces in the student residences.
The company implemented a zero-landfill policy to help reduce waste during the project, using strict circular economy principles. During the refurbishment, 100% of materials used were either recycled or reused in other properties across King’s College London. This included chairs, showerheads and lockers to be used elsewhere in the university estate.
“Each year, more than 6,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students choose King’s Residences as their home. King’s College London has worked in collaboration with Better Green Living to create upgraded residences that offer a safe, inclusive, and service-focused community.
“Designed to support independent living, these spaces encourage non-academic learning, enriching the student experience and enhancing success both at King’s and beyond.”
Charles Gallagher, Director of Community Business Services, King’s College
Each bedroom was designed with bespoke furniture, including LED lighting and floating floors – an installation method where floorboards or tiles are not directly attached to the sub-floor, serving as a quicker and more cost-effective way to redesign flooring.
The accommodation was thoughtfully designed to reuse existing furniture and appliances where possible, such as toilets and sinks from previous projects, and USB and C cable plugs have been installed in each room to futureproof against changing technology.

All communal kitchens have integrated low-energy appliances and feature hob watches, which turn off automatically after 20 minutes of no usage.
Further refurbishment projects at Stamford Street Apartments included the gym, common room, parcel room, bin store and wellness area. Starting works in May 2021 the project has included 17 phases and is expected to complete in September 2025.
“As we complete the final phase of works at Stamford Street Apartments, it is fantastic to reflect on how much our team has already achieved.
“Working in line with our zero-landfill policy we have been able to place recycled materials in properties across King’s College London, to ensure no materials were sent to landfill unnecessarily.
“It has been great to redesign so many students’ rooms with effective and energy efficient features as the industry works towards net zero and we look forward to continuing working with King’s College London across its accommodation.”
